Anna Calleja |Embrace| oil on canvas

Throughout the Christmas season, New Craftsman St Ives exhibits new work by Maltese born artist Anna Calleja. Calleja's paintings explore quiet moments of introspection that relate to the comfort and melancholy of home. As a young artist living and working away from Malta, her interest lies in dualities, in the tension between isolation and connection, love and pain, and in confronting an anxious present and uncertain future.

Anna graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2020. She has exhibited at Spazju Kreattiv in Malta and at Tate St. Ives, Porthmeor Studios Cornwall, and at the Mall Galleries in London. In 2020, her painting,Alone in Quarantinewas awarded the Winsor and Newton Young Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition, and earlier this year she was awarded the Premju Ghal-Arti for Best Young Artist of the Year by Arts Council Malta.

Also on show is a mixed collection of work inspired by the very best in contemporary craft, from fine art jewellery and sculpture to studio ceramics, including ceramic 'assemblage' and collage by Central St Martins graduate Matthew Richardson, and sculptural works by Rowena Brown and Justine Allison, against a backdrop of exceptional Cornish and British painting.
