This November, Whitewater Contemporary presents work by well-known Polzeath artist Suki Wapshott. Suki studied English at Oxford University before becoming one of North Cornwall's most recognized painters.
Representing a year of studio work, this collection demonstrates her ongoing passion for Polzeath and its surrounding landscape, and includes large scale paintings alongside a handful of smaller abstract works which respond the wider Cornish landscape.Whilst landscape inspires her work, Suki's focus as an artist has always been on expression, achieved through freedom of process and her instinctive use of colour and structure. Fans of Suki's work will be familiar with the dazzling array of colours used in her paintings, from her favouriteMagenta to Kings Blue, and her skill in taking powerful hues from bright to softly subdued. As a studio painter, her many hours spent walking and sketching the coastline are translated back at the easel into works filled with emotive response more than observation, works which embrace experimentation and the beauty of accidental details. The raw texture of the canvas, Suki's own hands, as well as rags, brushes and palette knives, are all employed in the creation of her vibrant works.
