AN innovative new sea safety app will be launched in Cornwall this week, aimed at keeping more lives safe at sea and helping families plan their days on the beach.

Jo Murray, who had the idea for the app, says it will give information on everything from tides, to parking, wave and weather conditions - and even the names of your local lifeguards.

The My Coast app is being backed by organisations such as South West Water, the RNLI, the Met Office and Plymouth and Exeter Universities.

Pilot schemes will be carried out over the next six weeks at three beaches in Cornwall, Perranporth, Gyllyngvase and Porthtowan.

The aim is for the app to become a one-stop-shop for visitors and residents looking for information about Cornwall's beaches.

A Crowdfunder campaign helped to raise the seed funding for the project which is expected to roll out across the county following feedback from the summer's information-gathering campaign.
