Penstripe Tackling Period Poverty in UK Schools
Period Poverty is a huge issue in UK secondary schools with 1 in 10 school girls regularly experiencing an inability to access the period products they need. Period Poverty happens when women and girls suffer an inability to access the period products they need, usually due to financial reasons. Each year, over 130,000 school girls miss school time due to their periods.
Penstripe are fighting to change this with a brand new product designed to freely dispense period products to the women and girls who need them. The unique Period Products Dispenser is designed to give access to period products in a safe, hygienic and efficient manner.
The solution in many schools - if period products are offered at all - is to place the products into a generic box in bathrooms. Unfortunately this is unhygienic, inefficient and open to abuse. The Period Products Dispenser offers several key advantages, such as a high capacity, single unit dispense and an easy clean design. It is also highly visible and designed to be permanently mounted in bathrooms.
Penstripe's mission is to install a Period Products Dispenser in every UK school so that girls always have access to the period products they need. The product is already having a fantastic response from schools and Period Poverty campaigners:
“We supply a range of schools, colleges, universities and workplaces across the UK with our sustainable period products. Having a new dispenser that limits cross contamination is a great option for washrooms for people to access free period products in a safe way.”
Celia Hodson, CEO and Founder of Hey Girls, a Period Poverty social enterprise
“At King Edwards VI School we’re conscious of how periods and the lack of access to suitable period products can affect the school day for our students and staff. To support our wider ‘Let’s Talk About Periods’ campaign the PTA funded the installation of free-vend Period Products Dispensers in five toilet blocks and changing rooms across the school site. We’re hoping that the free availability of period products will reduce stress and absences, plus gradually start to dispel the stigma surrounding the subject of periods.”
Mrs Bridgette Gillson, King Edward VI School Lichfield
