Caroline Cleave |Cottages, Port Isaac

Throughout October, Whitewater Contemporary presents a new collection of work by Port Isaac painter and printmaker Caroline Cleave. Titled ‘One Day', the collection is centred around time spent in Caroline's home village which, although rapidly changing, still evokes its historic past. Port Isaac is a place in which the artist's family has lived for over 400 years, a place which has, in the artists own words "slowly percolated into me through the myths, memories and folk tales that are woven into every fibre of the place". This collection of work condenses years and seasons into a single day from dawn to dusk, capturing the essence of Port Isaac through the simple, unassuming elements that have sustained this picturesque village and hardworking community over time. From Port Isaac's harbour with its protective, arm-like breakwaters, to the hidden valley trail that leads to a ‘love tree' that bears initials from years long past, to the familiarity of the suns trajectory spreading its afternoon glow on the fields, the imagery in Caroline's work reveals a deep and tender relationship between the artist and her home.

Knowing where the first snowdrops, violets and primroses will appear isheart-warming and is something that has been seen and celebrated for generations by many still living in the village today".
