The Brain Trust announces Brain of the Year

 Press Release

Dr David Starkey CBE wins Brain Trust Brain of the Year Award for 2021-2022

David Starkey is one of Britain’s leading historians, a notable broadcaster and an outspoken , if sometimes controversial, commentator on current affairs. Starkey’s robust stance on Freedom of Speech, combined with his resilience in fighting back against Cancel Culture, acted as a powerful magnet, attracting the attention of the Brain Trust Committee, which is responsible for presenting the annual award.

The awards have a three decade long pedigree. They were founded in 1991 by Tony Buzan, inventor of Mind Maps and considered by many to be a genius for his investigations into the workings of the human brain. This year we are celebrating what would have been Tony’s 80th birthday, and during his lifetime the Brain of the Year accolade was accorded to (amongst others) fifteen year World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, Eight times world Memory Power Champion, Dominic O Brien, Prof Stephen Hawking, Sir Steve Redgrave, Baroness Susan Greenfield, Creative thinking guru, Edward de Bono and astronaut, Senator John Glenn.

Starkey is a committed and active public intellectual. His outspokenness and his fearless regard for the sanctity of facts, however unfashionable, inevitably clashed with the new ethos of Woke.Matters came to a head in July 2020, when his blatant disregard for woke convention led to his ‘cancellation’ and the withdrawal of most of his many academic honours and distinctions.

Since then, Starkey’s activities as a commentator have taken on a fresh urgency and seriousness. He has been determined, as both a passionate believer in free speech and an equally unashamed advocate for the values and history of western society, to show that ‘cancellation’ can be overcome.
And indeed that it can provide a launchpad for fresh activities. Post-cancellation Starkey has most importantly set up his own YouTube Channel, David Starkey Talks, which aims to fuse history and commentary on current affairs into a potent and engaging mix, now attracting ever increasing
numbers of viewers who dare to think for themselves.

David Starkey is the living embodiment of the maxim that the only thought worthy of the name is free thought. He operates within a tradition exemplified by Boethius, Copernicus, Galileo, Voltaire and Nietzsche.

The Brain Trust is proud to honour a paragon of the way in which the human brain should function, without deference to fashion, favour or force and beholden only to the truth.
