Travel on UK waterways looks set to become even more environmentally friendly thanks to cutting-edge battery technology developed by a Staffordshire company.

Hoppecke Industrial Batteries is well-known in the logistics sector. Increasingly, however, its batteries are powering an ever-broader range of machinery, equipment and vehicles, including canal boats.

The Wolstanton-based firm is partnering with Hybrid Marine to develop diesel-electric hybrid boat engines that improve energy efficiency whilst reducing emissions. A complete solution is now available for new, custom-built canal boats.

Hoppecke's General Manager, Stuart Browne, explained: "We're all more conscious of our impact on the environment, so it's no surprise that the boating community, and key industry stakeholders, are keen to reduce pollution across our waterways.

"We're delighted to play our part by helping to develop a solution that offers significant economic and environmental advantages without spoiling people's enjoyment of the boating experience."

When no mains electricity connection is available, Hoppecke's battery provides sufficient energy to power all typical domestic appliances through a large inverter. As a result, most boats can eliminate gas altogether and implement an electric galley. A further advantage of the emission-free electric drive is that boats can cruise almost silently for prolonged periods, further reducing the impact on wildlife.

Currently, Hoppecke builds and installs special battery banks at boatyards in Droitwich, Poynton in Cheshire and Liverpool.
