Gardening club for people living with dementia

A care home in Folkestone is looking for members to join its new monthly gardening club.

Pelham House Care Home is starting a community gardening club in May, where local people with dementia and their families can come each month to enjoy pottering about and helping to manage the garden.

Roberta Harrold, who organises the activities for residents, said: "We'd love to have people from our local community who are living with dementia, coming in to enjoy our free ‘Gardening for Dementia' afternoons, get some fresh air, relax, chat and meet some other people.
"We'll be doing something different every month including planting raised beds, caring for plants, enjoying the plants flowering of course, making friends and enjoying tea, cake and chat too!
"Many older people with dementia living locally either live alone or have few people around them and this monthly club will give them something to look forward to, provide an opportunity to get out of the house, enjoy the outdoors and be a part of something very productive.
"We invite people living with dementia plus their families too, as our staff will be on-hand to answer any questions they might have about dementia and help them to overcome and challenges they have whilst providing care to their friend or relative.
"It can be very lonely living with dementia or looking after someone who has dementia and this club aims to open up a little community that can offer help and support."

The club will run on the following dates, from 2pm to 4pm:
May 11th
June 8th
July 13th
August 10th
September 14th

Places are free but booking in advance is advisable, so that the care home staff can ensure any help needed, is put into place.
Care home staff and staff from Pelham House's sister company Aspire Home Care will be on-hand to help, plus answer any questions about dementia, home care and give tips for helping someone who needs a little help at home.

Donations of plants are also very welcome. To find out more, book in or donate plants, contact:
