Inspirational young person takes on Kiltwalkto fund Nepal WASH projects
Young Falkirk resident Calum Hamilton (17) took on the Glasgow Kiltwalk on Sunday 24 April 2022 to fundraise for a 10-week Raleigh Expedition to Nepal with Raleigh International.
In 2015 Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake which resulted in the destruction of villages, cultural monuments, and a devastatingly high loss of life. Seven years on, Nepal continues to recover, especially in rural areas where water infrastructures were greatly impacted by the disaster. On a Raleigh Expedition in Nepal volunteers aged 17-24 work with local communities on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programmes to increase access to safe water and improve access to safe sanitation and hygiene facilities. Alongside these programmes, volunteers hold hygiene and sanitation workshops which teach communities vital hygiene and sanitation practices, such as handwashing.
Calum tackled 22.6 miles of the Glasgow Kiltwalk, but his biggest challenge wasn’t the walk itself. He says:
“The Kiltwalk itself was definitely a very hard walk, I mean I still have some blisters from it, but I think what challenged me more was the fundraising that I did in preparation for it. Getting into fundraising and learning about it, asking people I don't really know or even complete strangers for sponsors has been a new and alien process to me that has definitely pushed me.”
Funds raised by Calum for his volunteering will contribute to the projects in Nepal and developing and delivering Raleigh International’s projects worldwide. Calum says:
“I want to go [on Expedition] with Raleigh as I've decided to take a gap year and wanted to make the most of the time I have. Travelling has always massively interested me but I would also really like to try living somewhere different and properly become immersed in a culture that differs from my own. I see this expedition as a way to do this on top of being able to give back to the people who provide the experiences that I will obtain.”
Calum has raised £2,128 of his £3,800 target so far through this Go Fund Me page.

About Raleigh International
Raleigh International is a youth-driven organisation supporting a global movement of young people to take action. We want a fair, inclusive, and green world where young people confront the planet’s most urgent crises. We exist to ignite youth-led action that creates solutions to the world’s most urgent problems. But while young people demand change now, they do not always know how to take action. We support young people by connecting them with the skills, networks, platforms and experiences to lead action on the change they demand.
We are creating a generation of young leaders who are taking action now. We work globally to promote the role of young people in decision making and civil society, creating meaningful youth employment and enterprise, protecting vulnerable environments and combating climate change, and ensuring the right to safe water and sanitation.

All the best,
Isla Russell
