Building a reputation for corporate responsibility in the construction sector:
VPS Director gains Health and Safety Award

Carolyn Smith CMIOSH, ACILEx,MIIRSM, a Director at the safety and security specialistsThe VPS Group, has won Health and Safety Manager of the Year at the Safety and Health Excellence Awards, held at the NEC Vox Conference Centre, Birmingham.

With hundreds of peers in the sector attending, a strong line-up of finalists, including the Deputy Director of Environment Agency, and hosted by comedian Hugh Dennis, Carolyn said "It was a great evening all round. I am of course thrilled to have won the SHE Award, but more so because it adds to the recognition of all the hard work that the whole health, safety and wellbeing team have put into embedding a really great, positive ethos about health and safety throughout the company."

Managing Director of UK and Ireland, The VPS Group, Luke Staton said: "Carolyn has led by example, transforming the health and safety of our business, building a safety platform and umbrella for all. As a recognised partner in the construction and facilities management sectors, for example, providing safety and security services, it is critical we match up to and exceed our customers' expectations."

The Award was presented by Helen Jones CEng MICE, the Chief Operating Officer, Enterprise Customers Alcumus, the sponsor of the award.

Carolyn added: "Since the pandemic, health, safety and wellbeing has played a far more significant role in our day to day working lives, but, more than that, it has broken away from the clipboard box-checking stereotype of a bygone age. People now embrace it and recognise it as a positive element. Looking after ourselves, and looking out for each other has become much more the norm. It's a great time to develop and build on this."

VPS provide specialist security and safety solutions for local authorities and the commercial sector, protecting temporarily vacant properties, often blending technological options with more traditional physical barriers and human guards. They also support safety initiatives for highway works with traffic incursion and low bridge warnings systems, that last year won them equipment specialist of the year for the construction sector.
