Why Do Babies Get All the Attention?
A Children’s Book that Takes a Different Approach to Teaching Kids About Life Through Humour

Essex-based author David Hollinshead is proud to release his children’s mixed-race book, Why Do Babies Get All the Attention?

This non-PC children’s book offers something completely different to what is currently on the market. It addresses real-life and relevant societal situations and circumstances in a fun way for children to understand. The coming series intelligently fuses elements of ancient mythology with the spirit of Roald Dahl's The Twits and a kid-friendly version Monty Python’s absurdity. Teaming this with the striking illustrations by the infamous artist Ned Pamphilon, Why Do Babies Get All the Attention? makes for a memorable read that offers so much more than the norm.

Set on the far-away island of Dingleberry, the book tells the tale of Binks and his pregnant mum doing their best on a distant unfamiliar shore. Even though Binks’ dad is lost at sea, they create a new family away from the rest of the world with an enchanting group of personalities and characters. Binks embarks on weird and wonderful adventure to stop his baby sister crying; the author cleverly weaving the storyline to show children how to avoid the pitfalls of sibling rivalry and think more critically around adult mayhem. It not only educates and provides entertainment, but to show children that it’s ok not to get things right the first time.

The book explores topics that other children’s books typically don’t or won’t. Its light and irreverent touch encourages its own Dingleberry discussions that bring the story right into the heart of family life. In short; it puts life in front of you without the fluff!

The author is part of an African and White-British family, and he uses caricatures of his family experiences. The unintended consequence is that the book speaks to a wider audience.

David Hollinshead, the author, comments:

“I didn’t set out to become a children’s author. I was tired of the humdrum selection of new books out there for my kids. The only place we ever find magic is in older books from charity shops and eBay. I’m very aware of the types of PC messaging in kids books now, and I need to give my kids more perspective, and offer the same to other parents. My son’s school loves the book too, the headmistress said, it’s wonderful. I also think it’s a good thing that my kids get to see some African caricatures in books too, as they’re half-Somali, and my boy is already asking about his identity. Having an almost three-year-old and a third baby along the way, I’m going to be very busy writing for them too! My family are looking forward to seeing how the Universe: Itself unfolds.”

Why Do Babies Get All the Attention? is available for £7.99 and can be purchased on Amazon or via the website https://www.universeitself.com/books/
