Luke Knight |Porthtowan| Oil on board
Throughout June, Whitewater Contemporary exhibits work by award winning painter Luke Knight.Luke's new collection of land and seascapes is inspired by the spectacular North Cornwall coast, with a particular focus on his love of colour, and on capturing the ever-changing tones of Cornwall's unique light from dawn to dusk. Playing deliberately with the materiality of paint and board, Luke builds subtle tone into his work with thin layers of colour, contrasted with bolder areas of thick gloss or chalky paint, later stripping back or sanding the surface of his work to add detail and texture, repeatedly eroding, colouring and polishing the image in a way that reflects the richness of the Cornish landscape.
Luke studied Fine Art at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, and at the L'Ecole De Beaux-Art in Nantes, France. European painting, in particularthe work ofPierre Bonnard, and British maritime and landscape painters Julius Olsson and Fred Cuming RA, have been significant influences on his work.In just the first few years of his career, Luke'spaintings have won him a prestigious European award for rising new artists, and were recentlyselected for the Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition in London, making him one of Cornwall's most collectable new artists.
