Emma Jeffryes | Walking Cornwall

with ceramics by Yo Thom

16 April - 14 May 2022

Gorse at Portheras Cove| Emma Jeffryes

Emma Jeffryes' new collection of paintings is inspired by a series of extended walks around the beautiful West Cornwall coast. Having taken up walking during the pandemic, a habit which resulted in her highly successful 2021 exhibitionLanes, Hedgerow & Coast Path, Emma describes her new passion as offering "a whole new world of discovery and observation, a fascination for exploring what is right on our doorstep". As the world has opened up, Emma has ventured further out from her local lanes of Carbis Bay to stretches of the Southwest coast path, recording her walks with sketches and notes in her journal. During the summer, she walked a large section of the path from St. Ives, down the North Coast around to Lands End, and along the south coast to Porthcurno, Lamorna, Mousehole, Penzance, Marazion and Prussia Cove to Rinsey Head. The resulting collection is a visual record of West Cornwall's commanding headlands, jagged rocks and wind-smoothed boulders, the steep ups and downs of the coast path, its secluded coves and gentle wildflowers, and the ever-present sea. The exhibition also includes works inspired by Emma's favourite subject of St Ives bay. Also on show is new work by Japanese potterYo Thom. Yo works in the heart of the beautiful Dorset countryside, and her current work responds to the landscape surrounding her rural workshop. Her hand-built, functional stoneware is influenced by both British and traditional Japanese pottery and food culture, and this collection is developed with her love of Japanese indigo fabric and its traditional patterns in mind.
