Marking the launch of their 2022 Featured Artist series of solo exhibitions, Whitewater Contemporary bring you a new collection of paintings and sculptures by the ever-popular artist Simeon Stafford.

Simeon is known for capturing the lively detail of people and places in his delightfullynaïvepaintings, as well as his quirky portraits and still-life works. His richly populated scenes are illustrative of the bustling energy of beaches, markets and city streets, and the unique character of the communities that live, work and play there.

This collection includes paintings inspiredby the busy North Cornwall beaches of Polzeath and Daymer, the harbours of Padstow and Port Isaac in summer, and the daily workings of Cornwall's fishing industry and historic mining scene. Also included are examples of Simeon's highly collectable bronze figures, including his famous Yo Yo Girl.

Stafford was born in Manchester in 1956, and as a child was introduced to celebrated painter L.S. Lowry who became a friend of the family and encouraged him to study art. He went on to study at Hyde College and in 1974 became a professional artist, exhibiting works that reflected the gritty northern landscape in what has been called a Primitive style. In 1996 Stafford moved to Cornwall where he met artists Terry Frost and Patrick Heron. Their influence, as well as that of Lowry's, is evident in Stafford's simple figures, densely populated scenes, and uplifting palette of rainbow colours. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, and his work is held in numerous public and private collections, including that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
