Glasgow lawyers raise over £73,000 in online auction to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer

Glasgow lawyers Just Employment Law have raised a staggering £73,140 in an online auction held in November for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM).

The auction raised vital funds for Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland (PCAS), of whom Just Employment Law are long-term supporters.

The 100 lots in the online auction were a real sight to behold. Some of the highest-selling items included a rare copy of ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ which was signed by Ian Fleming and sold for £11,030. A first edition set of The Karla trilogy by John Le Carré sold for £6,500 and a limited edition Cartier Santos Dumont watch sold for £7,000.

In addition to the online auction, Just Employment Law helped to raise funds and awareness through hosting their “Purple Thistle Day” at Partick Thistle Football Club on Sat 30th October.

JEL are the main sponsors of the club - this was the third year that they’ve used a home match to embrace the colour purple associated with pancreatic cancer, to help shine a light on the disease assisted by the players, management, JEL staff and PCAS supporters.

In total their fundraising has generated over £75,000 this year which will benefit the people of Scotland by helping Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland to increase the 5-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer. Five years ago, it was a shocking 3%. Now, the figure stands at 5.3% - proving that awareness-raising does work!

David McRae is the Managing Director of Just Employment Law and he started fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland after he sadly lost his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2016.

He said: “Five years ago my eyes were opened to Pancreatic Cancer when I lost my mother.  I simply could not believe the low survival rates; the lack of early detection; and the chronic lack of funding for this aggressive strain of cancer.  From that point on I resolved to support PCAS to fund research and awareness.  My colleagues and I at JEL are delighted to be in a position to support PCAS and are always humbled by the backing we receive from the business community and general public.  We stand with all who are affected by this awful disease”

Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland’s mission is to improve survival rates of pancreatic cancer by ensuring more people are diagnosed early and that everyone has access to effective treatments, support, information and care. Early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is one of the biggest challenges of the disease and results in hundreds of unnecessary deaths each year.

Fiona Brown, Finance and Scottish Development Manager for Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland said “We are continually inspired and grateful to David, the JEL team and their networks for their commitment, energy and passion to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer. Their activities help open more conversations about the disease and with some really special unique items on the online auction they have raised an incredible amount of money, that will help us in our drive to make the 2020’s the Decade of Change for pancreatic cancer”.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month is an annual event where charities, organisations and communities worldwide join forces to raise awareness and understanding of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer.

Many Scottish landmarks “turned it purple” and showed their support by lighting up purple for World Pancreatic Cancer Day on 18th November. Venues that got involved included West Dunbartonshire Council Office, Kings Theatre, Camera Obscura, Murrayfield Stadium, Livingston Civic Centre, Balmoral Clock Tower, Perth Theatre, Royal Bank of Scotland HQ, Scottish Border Council Headquarters, Caird Hall, Dundee and Discovery, Dundee.

Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland is the Scottish arm of Pancreatic Cancer Action, a national charity that operates in the rest of the UK.
