University set to create mural to celebrate diversity

Students and staff at the University of Strathclyde are working together to create a new artwork on campus to celebrate the diversity of the University community.
The project will see a new mural being commissioned for the gable end of the Graham Hills building in the heart of campus on the corner of Richmond Street and North Portland Street. It has been announced as part of the University's Black History Month activities to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.
The mural was the idea of Nesha Malone, Vice-President Inclusion, at Strath Union. She said: "Black culture and history have deep roots in Glasgow, and it's fitting that we are launching our plans during Black History Month.
"We want to look to the future and create an image that will inspire and excite others to believe in the possibilities ahead of us."
Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal of the University, said: "As a University, we deeply value diversity and we are extremely proud of our University community of staff, students and alumni.
"We are delighted to be working with Strath Union to create a lasting and inspiring celebration of our community - and one that will hopefully be enjoyed by students, staff and visitors for a long time to come."
The next stage of the project will see students and staff being asked for their ideas to inform the vision of the celebratory piece. It is expected that it will be painted in the new year.
Nathan Epemolu, BAME representative at Strath Union, said: "This is a project which brings together culture and the arts to create a future-focused view of what could be.
"Black History Month is a great time to begin the project, however, rather than ending on the 31st October, we see this as the start, with no end to our journey."
