This year marks potter Hugh West's 50thyear in ceramics, and Whitewater Contemporary are proud to host his anniversary exhibition,Etherial, throughout September. Hugh studied at Hereford School of Art & Design aged seventeen, later studying ceramics at Redruth School of Art. He established his own studio in Cornwall in 1971, and later a large production pottery in Devon, before relocating to La Borne in France, where an ancient pottery village still survives. Here, he committed himself to working with the traditional forms and wood firing skills typical of that region of central France. In 2014 Hugh returned to Cornwall with his family and bought a cottage that included an old-fashioned toll house on the roadside, which he converted into his studio, known as Toll House Pottery.

This new collection of Hugh'sfinely structured, beautifully finished porcelain workscelebrates his long and prolific career and is comprised simply of"pots that have pleased me the most within this 50thyear of creativity",glazed using recipes that have taken Hugh's lifetime to perfect,"a myriad of them, equivalent to an artist's palette, giving me endless choice when one of my beautiful forms is ready to be glazed".

Hugh is a member of Cornwall Crafts Associations, the West Country Potters Association and the Penwith Society of Arts. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in the UK, and has exhibited in group shows in Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the United States.
