Yorkshire distillery celebrates World Whisky Masters awards

The team at Yorkshire's first single malt whisky distillery is celebrating its success in a prestigious world whisky competition.

Five of Hunmanby based Spirit of Yorkshire's whiskies were awarded medals, including a coveted Masters medal, three golds and a silver, at the 2021 World Whisky Masters Competition recently.

The Masters medal was awarded for Filey Bay Single Cask - Fino Sherry Cask #669.With "rich brandy grapes, sweet candied citrus peel" aromas, the judges enjoyed flavours of "rich berries, baking spices, bitter almonds and bitter orange" on the palate, accentuated by the whisky's "rich mouthfeel".

The gold medals were awarded to Filey Bay Moscatel Finish, Filey Bay STR Finish and Filey Bay Sherry Cask Reserve #1. Filey Bay Flagship won a silver medal.

Of the results, Spirit of Yorkshire's Whisky Director, Joe Clark said: ‘We entered five whiskies in the Europe (excluding Ireland and Scotland): Single Malt category and were highly delighted and very proud to be awarded the only Masters medal of the 27 awards and to win half of all the medals that were awarded to English whisky distilleries."

Spirit of Yorkshire's Co-founder and MD, David Thompson added:"After years of waiting for our spirit to mature into single malt whisky, it is fantastic to know that five of our young whiskies have been recognised by experts in the industry.

"Masters and gold medals are not commonplace for four year old whiskies. These awards are testament that our ethos of respecting tradition but doing things differently is working.

"It's very rewarding to know that the character and maturity of our spirit are generating major excitement in the industry."

The results come on the back of success in last month's IWSC competition where the young distillery won six awards.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery is Yorkshire's first single malt whisky distillery and is one of only a handful of distilleries that grows the barley for whisky production. It is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor from Wold Top Brewery and business partner, David Thompson.
