ORANGE PIP MARKET TO RETURN THIS WEEKEND

MIDDLESBROUGH'S Orange Pip Market is set to return this weekend.

The popular street food event makes its comeback after being halted while people have observed the necessary coronavirus restrictions.

The ‘Pip' will be held on Centre Square once more on Saturday, July 31, instead of its regular home on Baker and Bedford Street to allow social distancing at the event. However, the two streets will still host musical "fringe" activity.

Capacity restrictions will be in place during the market to prevent overcrowding during the festival of live music, food and drink and entertainment.

Attendance will be capped at 1,000 and organisers are encouraging market-goers to take a lateral flow test before visiting and sanitize hands throughout.

This Sunday will also see a Pirate Day event take place in Middlesbrough.

The day will include a Pirate Explorer Trail, a family picnic, science experiments and an exploration exhibition.

It will take place on Sunday, August 1 from 11am-4pm at Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park.

Cllr Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council's Deputy Mayor and Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: "We're really pleased to be bringing back the Orange Pip Market this weekend after what has been a really difficult time for everybody.

"We're not out of the woods yet so we will be limiting capacity to the event but we hope everyone can enjoy the return of the Pip safely and in good spirits."
