LANE CLOSURES ON THE A66 TO START THIS WEEKEND

A SERIES of programmed lane closures on both carriageways of the A66 through Middlesbrough will commence this weekend.

The lane closures will allow essential routine maintenance works to be carried out safely.

The first set of lane closures will be in operation on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18, and will affect both carriageways of the A66 between the A19 and Hartington Interchange.

Lane closures will also be required on Newport Roundabout and Hartington Roundabout, and on the slip roads to and from the A66 at each junction.

The closures will come into operation at 6am on both days, and will be removed by 12noon on Saturday and by 1pm on Sunday at the latest.

Moderate delays are possible, particularly on Saturday when traffic flows are likely to be higher, although every effort will be made to reduce disruption to traffic to a minimum while the works are underway.

Further lane closures will be required on the same section of the A66 on the weekend of Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25.

The focus will then switch to the section of the A66 to the east of the town centre, with lane closures between Hartington Interchange and the Cargo Fleet Junction programmed for Saturday, July 31, Sunday, August 1, Saturday, August 7 and Sunday, August 8.

The programme of highway maintenance works will continue until March 2022, but with lane closures on Sundays only. No works will be carried out before or during the Christmas and New Year period.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: "The A66 is the main east-west route through Middlesbrough, carrying up to 100,000 vehicles on a typical weekday. Regular maintenance works are essential to ensure that the road is able to handle the high volume of traffic that uses it on a daily basis.

"Carrying these works out on a weekend rather than during the week will reduce disruption to the travelling public, although some delays are possible.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank motorists for their patience and understanding."
