WEEK OF ACTION TACKLING NEWPORT PROBLEMS

DRUG dealing, noise complaints and neighbour disputes are among a series of issues attacked in an intense week of action in a Middlesbrough community.

Middlesbrough's new locality working team co-ordinated the work to address problems in the Newport ward in the town.

The council's locality working model involves placing staff from a number of areas, including area care, community safety, education, social care and others, with the communities they serve.

In this week of action Neighbourhood Safety Officers were joined by wardens, police officers, police community support officers, members of the council's selective licensing team, voluntary workers and others.

Their work involved dealing with a drug dealing report, dealing with a neighbour dispute and noise complaint, a covid-19 breach, helping a vulnerable woman and liaising with adult social care, moving on a beggar and offering support, engaging with children and carrying out foot patrols across the area.

Work was also carried out speaking to local business owners, dealing with litter and anti-social behaviour.

During the week of action Cleveland Police made seven arrests, carried out 12 stop and searches and handed out four anti-social behaviour notices.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: "I want people living in Newport and all other areas of Middlesbrough to know that this work is going on around the clock but to give reassurance we've had a week of really intense and very visible action.

"We're absolutely committed to stamping out this kind of bad behaviour which we know really blights good people's lives.

"We'll do everything we can, whether it's using legal powers or whatever else to tackle any anti-social or criminal behaviour.

"All we ask of the public is that you can really help us by reporting things to our Neighbourhood Safety Team anonymously or the police and then we can take it on."

Cleveland Police's Neighbourhood Sergeant John Sproson said: "We will always act to better the lives of our local residents by working to tackle antisocial behaviour and criminality, along with our partners.

"Where we receive reports we will always look at how we can solve these problems together. We would urge anyone in our local communities to contact us with any problems or concerns by calling 101 or Crimestoppers."
