Throughout July, New Craftsman Gallery presents work by landscape painter Neil Davies. Neil is known for his energetic brushwork, brilliant palette and dramatic compositions, which he brings together to express the sensorial beauty of the West Cornwall landscape. This collection was created during the winter and spring of 2020 and 2021, when freedom of movement was restricted and the artist's daily sketching walks on the Penwith peninsula were reduced to short bouts of ‘permitted' exercise. TitledA Breath of Fresh Air, the collection expresses the artist's heightened awareness of precious time spent in the landscape, and is a definitive visual record of Cornwall at an unusual time, a time of empty coves sparkling under a winter sky, ocean winds drifting across quiet moorland, and Atlantic waves crashing down upon deserted beaches.

On show alongside Neil's collection are ceramics by Korean born artist Jin Eui Kim. His work is hand-thrown and hand-painted on the wheel, and explores the way in which our perception of three-dimensional forms can be manipulated through the arrangement of surface tones. In addition to a collection of thrown forms, this collection includes a hand-built series of framed ‘cube' works, which are arranged to create patterns that appear differently when viewed from different angles and depths. The development of these works was facilitated by a grant from the Arts Council of Wales to support artists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The gallery also presents jewellery by artist Guy Royle, whose work is known for its superb, handcrafted quality and distinctive motifs. Guy's necklaces, bangles, brooches and earrings are made in his West Cornwall studio using silver and 18ct gold set with semi-precious stones and beads that have been created, shaped and polished by the artist himself.
