This July, the Crypt Gallery St Ives presents the first ever solo exhibition by painter Randy Lawrenson-Reid. Randy's passion for painting and his innate sense of space, shape, colour and form developed against the influential backdrop of 1960s culture. As a teenage friend and contemporary of designer Paul Smith, and a devotee of ‘Mod' culture and the scooter phenomenon, Randy was immersed in the music, design and Italian suited style of the era. This resonated with such ferocity after the drab, post-war years of his childhood, that 60 years on it remains the very essence of his creativity. Paul Smith clothing, Terence Conran furniture, Mary Quant fabrics, David Bailey photography, the ingénue style of fashion model Twiggy, and the Pop Art paintings of both David Hockney and Andy Warhol are all significant influences on the sharp structure and explosive colour of his mixed media works.
Though born in Canada, Randy was raised in England and first exhibited his paintings in Nottingham as a child. This early recognition ignited his desire to explore a range of creative expressions in his youth, including sculpture, landscape design and fine food, before he achieved his ultimate aim of living and working in Cornwall as an artist from the 1980s onwards. Randy's work has previously been exhibited at the Birmingham Arts Centre, the Plymouth Guildhall, Newlyn Art Gallery and The Eclipse Gallery in Penzance. This much anticipated, first solo exhibition at the Crypt Gallery includes 40 paintings and reveals a stylishly sharp body of work which exhibits the precision and clarity of form that defines his paintings.
