‘Must-have' new handbook for creative founders and freelancers reveals real-life secrets to a thriving artistic career

It's a welcome antidote to tired ‘fake-it-till-you-make-it' claptrap, as Hay-on-Wye-based author and coach, Helen Jane Campbell, rails against that old-school advice, explaining instead how to be authentically you AND thrive.

The book is full of experts sharing the naked truth from their lived experiences, for example:

This ‘inspiring, insightful' new guide for existing and would-be entrepreneurs is attracting glowing praise for showing how to turn talent and the dream of a creative business into a real-world success:

"A great, insightful read that's inspiring to anyone self employed or looking to be so. Full on inspiration, practical advice and support - it's a must have for any independent creative."

Anita Bhagwandas, author, journalist & beauty director

Comprehensive and extremely easy to digest, Founders, Freelancers & Rebels is an impressive publishing debut from life and business coach Helen Jane Campbell. She interviewed dozens of successful entrepreneurs, over two years, to ensure the guide is true-to-life - and packed it full of invaluable tips and anecdotes from people who have turned their business dreams into reality.

It's a journey Campbell has first-hand experience of. She built on her own successful 20-year PR career to become a professional coach for ambitious, creative entrepreneurs, and her experiences are reflected in the refreshing honesty of this book.

She says: ‘The people I interviewed for the book are, without exception, all inspirational and, while they measure success in many different ways, they have all done the hard miles.

‘Whether that's the story of a young twenty-something trying to get a fintech PR agency off the ground in New York just as the 2008 crash hits, or simply how to overcome the fears faced by anyone starting up for the first time, the interviews are packed full of learning, wisdom and a few bruises.

‘This book is utterly authentic - yes, there are lots of hints, tips and inspirational nuggets, but it is all grounded in the real-world experiences of real people. You won't find any "fake-it-till-you-make-it" claptrap in here, because I don't subscribe to that approach - and also because reality is much more fascinating than fakery.'

The book's a guide to all aspects of launching or improving your own creative business. It covers everything from mindset and finance to winning clients (with key tips from the PR firm who landed craft brewery BrewDog as a client at its inception). A powerful running theme throughout the guide is how to take failures and brazenly turn them to your advantage.

Campbell lives in the world-famous book-town of Hay-on-Wye, on the England-Wales border, and has drawn inspiration from the people and businesses there too.

She says: ‘I'm painfully aware of the irony of launching a book when I'm based in a book-town whose shop doors are currently closed, because of the pandemic.

‘But that is such a perfect example of the challenges that creative founders can come up against, and I have to embrace it. It has forced me to look at my launch in other ways, so - for example -  I'm teaming up with local craft Brewery, Lucky 7, to launch a limited Founders, Freelancers & Rebels desk beer for readers to claim locally with every book purchase. If we can't have a party I'll bring the party to each reader's home office in an innovative way.'
