Every builder knows the challenges of working in the wonderfully unpredictable British weather so, when James King ofThe Supreme Finishing Companystarted his latest build in the run up to Christmas, he knew that it may not all be plain sunny sailing.

James' challenge has been captured in SkillBuilder's How To Build An Extension series (episode 5) and is available to watch onYouTube.  The project is a new extension in Ashtead, Surrey which will form a granny annex with a new bedroom overhead. The complex roof construction meant the first floor would not be covered in for a while.

As James explains "Building in the winter in the UK is obviously interesting so we chose Norbord'sCaberDekso the flooring would stand up to whatever precipitation may have come our way. Using CaberDek allowed the roof construction to be carried out safely and economically by providing a safe, weatherproof platform that formed the first floor. The brickies got off to a flying start and I got the joists in and the CaberDek flooring down in double quick time so they could continue. It was all going so well but then it rained and it rained and it rained. Then, when the rain stopped, the snow came in and the temperature dropped to minus five. We loaded out the blocks on the flooring in anticipation of a break in the weather but it just didn't come.

I must admit I looked at the flooring with all those blocks on it and the whole thing covered in snow and I thought it would be a miracle if it survived such harsh conditions" said James. "But, when the snow melted and the bricklayers had done their bit, we gave the floor a good sweep off and it was in pristine condition. I was delighted to see just how well it stood up. At one point, that whole floor was a solid sheet of ice. The CaberDek turned out to be a great investment; it gave the brickies a good safe working platform and was so much better than the old way with temporary working platforms that then had to be taken up again to lay the finished floor. This system didn't only save cost; it also cut a whole stage of labour thus saving valuable time when battling the elements.  It is CaberDek all day long for me; it really is a no brainer as my kids like to say."

CaberDek, part of Norbord'sCaberFloorrange, is designed to withstand the elements for up to 42 days  between laying the floor and fixing the roof, when installed according to manufacturer's instructions. Samplesof CaberDek, and Norbord's other construction panels, can be ordered on the website,www.norbord.co.uk. Head to thehousebuilder pageon the website to download a selection of tools including a fully-interactive guide to all Norbord products and a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your build.
