Editors Notes
A Brief History of Macramé
Decorative Macramé dates back to 13th century Arabia, but may have originated as far back as third-century China, when elaborate knotting techniques were used in ceremonial textiles. It arrived in Europe in the late 17th century, when sailors began to make macramé objects while at sea, and bartered them around the world when they made landfall. It is also said that Queen Mary II of England developed a love of the craft and taught it to her ladies-in-waiting. Macramé became most popular in Europe amid the richly patterned, deeply textured interior style of the Victorian-era, and nearly a century later became a mainstay of 1970s bohemian fashion.
