Whitewater Gallery Polzeath continues its 2021 Featured Artist series with new work by much loved and highly collected painter Simeon Stafford, in a must-see exhibition for everyone who looks forward to the return of togetherness, leisure time, and existing shoulder to shoulder with our fellow human beings. This new collection is inspired by the beautiful area around Padstow, Rock, Daymer Bay and Polzeath, and all the bustle and fun of a busy summer season on the Cornish coast.
Stafford was born in Manchester in 1956, and as a child met celebrated naïve painter L.S. Lowry who encouraged him to pursue a career as an artist. He moved to Cornwall in 1996, leaving the industrial backdrop of the north for the very different physical and social landscape of the South West. While the influence of Lowry's style is evident in Stafford's simple figures and densely populated scenes, his painting style is contrastingly upbeat, and is defined by an uplifting palette of rainbow colours, and high-energy surfaces that reference the joy and humour of the human race ‘en masse'. His heart-warming and highly distinctive style has made him one of the UKs most recognised artists. Accordingly, he has exhibited at the Royal Academy, and his work is held in numerous public and private collections, including that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
