For Immediate Release

EVENT | Irina Davidovici in conversation with Micha Bandini

The next event from the Foundation for Architecture and Education (AE Foundation) will be held at the acclaimed Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio,Switzerland, on Friday 11 October 2013.  With an introduction by Jonathan Sergesi, architect and writer Irina Davidovici  will be in conversation with architect, urban planner and artist Micha Bandini, reflecting on the role of history in the architectural syllabus and the merits and the pitfalls of our current approach.

In many schools of architecture today, historical studies have either become simply a tool to illustrate design methods and techniques, or else have become too far removed from the discipline itself to provide a context and foundation for innovation and growth.  This event highlights these issues and asks how it is possible to teach students of architecture the true importance of history.

Irina Davidovici grew up in Romania and completed her training in the UK. After working in the office of Herzog & de Meuron, she gained her doctorate at Cambridge University in 2008. She is recipient of the RIBA President’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis. She taught history and theory of architecture at Kingston University from 2008 to 2012, and besides numerous essays, is the author of Forms of Practice, German-Swiss Architecture 1980–2000.

Micha Bandini is based in Tuscany. In 1967 she enrolled at Rome where she also assisted Bruno Zevi. After graduating she taught design with professor Ludovico Quaroni and worked for Giuseppe Samona. In 1979 she joined the Architectural Association where she founded and co-directed the History and Theory Graduate Program for the following 14 years. In 1990 she became the Head of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of North London.

The next UK event from the AE Foundation will be in the Spring of 2014 at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh when Alvaro Siza is giving an honorary talk.  More details to follow later, or keep track of AEF events through the website: www.aefoundation.co.uk/

Notes to Editors:

The AE Foundation was established in May 2011 with the aim of providing an open independent forum for the discipline of architecture. The discipline is facing serious challenges and we are keen to examine and contextualise these challenges within the broader structure of society. Our objectives are: To promote the significance of the architectural discipline, to encourage scholarship and the development of a discursive culture in partnership with individuals in practice and academia – and to be a centre par excellence for dialogue and debate in architectural history and contemporary practice. We bring together an international community of practitioners, academics and graduates who wish to pursue the subject seriously. The foundation contributes to and disseminates architectural knowledge and understanding through events, publications and exhibitions.
