Good morning,
Sudbury-based counsellor of 20 years, Jane Teverson, today celebrates the release of her book - Born Beautiful: How counselling theory can enrich our parenting - from psychology publisher Free Association Books. Born Beautiful, written for parents, poses the question: what is the quality of your interactions with your children? Jane Teverson believes it's never too late to be the parent you would have liked to have been, had your own circumstances been different. Her own experiences and the experiences of clients have left her with a passion for a good start in life for infants and children and the need for all of us to be aware of how our words and actions impact the life of others, for better or worse. With her book, she hopes that self awareness and person growth can be made a priority for us all.
For a review copy, editorial commissions and interviews with Jane, or for more information, please get in touch - we'd be happy to hear from you! Please see the press release below.

Born Beautiful
How Counselling Theory Can Enrich Our Parenting
By Jane Teverson
Born Beautiful offers insights from counselling theory that could enrich all child/adult relationships but especially the precious relationship between parent and child.
It asks the reader to really consider the quality of their interactions with children, which for better or worse, will stay with that child for the rest of their life... nothing is forgotten.
An advocate for the child in a world of adults, it makes a case for compassionate parenting and encourages awareness of our own childhood wounds and the need to do the work of healing, so that they don't get passed to the next generation.
And there's hope for older parents too, whose childhood deficits got in the way of the parent they would have liked to have been, with a message that you can start right now being the parent you would have liked to have been, had your own circumstances been different.
"There is so much that we can learn from the client/counsellor relationship that would help us understand what it is to be a child in a world full of adults, and so enrich our parent/child relationships and all our child/adult relationships. Most importantly, the counsellor can provide what was unavailable in early relationships. Key words in the relationship with the counsellor include: trust, closeness, intimacy, flexibility, encouragement, warmth, safety, mutuality, caring, compassion, kindness. These are words parents can incorporate into their relationships with their children as well."
About the author
Jane Teverson, who lives in Suffolk, has worked as a counsellor for over twenty years. Her initial training was in Person Centred Counselling but, because of an interest in unconscious processes, she also gained her accreditation in Psychodynamic Counselling. Both disciplines had informed her work.
