5 December to 4 January

Cornelius Jakob Van Dop | Moths and Crescent Moon

This December, New Craftsman Gallery St Ives marks the 75thbirthday of jeweler and Master Craftsman Cornelius Jakob Van Dop, with a celebratory exhibition of 75 of his beautiful works. He has been an exhibiting artist at New Craftsman since the 1970s, creating the distinctive, finely crafted works that have delighted collectors for nearly fifty years.

Van Dop was raised in Canada, and as a young man studied Philosophy and Art at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, before embarking on a gap year that brought him to Cornwall. He moved permanently to Cornwall in 1973, where he worked and studied with jeweler Red Simpson, before setting up his own studio. His exquisite rings, brooches and boxes are hand crafted in silver, copper, bronze, nickel and gilded metal using techniques reminiscent of Japanese, Egyptian and Celtic goldsmiths, and are inspired by the natural world.

The exhibition is accompanied by a rare collection of paintings byCornelius Jakob Van Dop himself, and other works to inspire you for the Christmas season, including still life paintings by Clara Holmes and Will Calver, coastal paintings by Martha Holmes and Sarah Woods, landscapes by Sally Holman, abstract works by Liz Hough, character scenes by Toni Potter, and silver and gold botanic lockets by Victoria Walker.

In support of those enduring the pandemic without the safety of a home or shelter, a percentage of the proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to Shelter England.
