Sheffield Optometrist launches range of frames from recycled ocean plastics

An independent Sheffield optometrist has launched a range of handmade spectacle frames that are produced from ocean waste.

Alex Gage, who owns practices in Woodseats and Crosspool, has launched the innovative ‘Sea2see'optical frames and sunglasses that are made entirely with recycled marine plastic waste that is collected in collaboration with thousands of fishermen in Spanish ports.

He explains: "The waste, including fishing nets, ropes, lines, or bottles, is then up-cycled into a reusable raw material: UPSEA™ PLAST Cradle to Cradle™ Gold Certified. This material is shipped to Italy to be moulded into frames, with each one being coloured by hand, making no two frames exactly the same."

A selection of Sea2see's spectacle frames are available at both practices and cost £150.

"It's great to be able to give our patients the option of a stylish frame that doesn't cost the earth, in more ways than one," concludes Mr Gage, who was the first in his team to invest in a pair.

The ‘Sea2see' range is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives adopted by the optometrist that includes recycling contact lenses, green energy to power his practices, paper reduction and LED lightbulbs. Mr Gage also cycles to work on his e bike in a bid to reduce his carbon emissions.

Alex Gage Family Optometrist specialises in family care, sports vision and behavioural optometry and has practices at857 Chesterfield Road, Woodseats and48 Sandygate Road,Crosspool.

Sea2see's aim is to create a global consciousness in regard to the issue of sea contamination through a product that people can wear with pride.
