Despite extremely difficult working conditions during COVID-19, Howards Chartered Certified Accountants is topping off a strong year with the internal promotion of its youngest ever manager.

Local girl Jenna Hands, 24, has worked with the firm for four years and takes on the role of manager from the October 1. Jenna has a team of three reporting to her and in addition to covering general accounting, oversees all audit work in the firm.

Matt Bailey, managing director, says: "I have always had a ‘promote-from-within' philosophy and am extremely proud of Jenna and her achievements. She has worked her way up and her dedication and accountability has earned her the trust of some of my major clients. She was a finalist in the Staffordshire Chambers Business Awards - Young Employee/Apprentice of the Year Award two years ago and now holds the record of being our youngest manager ever!"

Howards remains a highly profitable firm, but Matt believes success comes from investing in people. Each year, the company's profits are reinvested in developing the team and £80,000 is invested annually in training the 41 strong workforce. Several employees recently passed the key milestones of 25- and 30-years employment.

Says Jenna, "I joined just after I'd passed my AAT exams and Matt then supported me through my professional ACCA qualifications. I finally completed all 11 exams in June last year, at the same time as putting my all into my job. I am passionate about this company because it is a large firm in the area but still independently run. It is a great team here and everyone helps each other."

Attracting international groups as well as small and medium-sized local businesses, Howards delivered 10% year-on-year growth in turnover in 2019. In the past six months the firm has played a key role in supporting local businesses through COVID-19, assisting with furlough claims and SEISS grant applications. It has also taken on 43 new small and medium-sized clients in manufacturing, construction, and the charity sector.
