Is the NHS prepared for a possible Babyboom in 2021?

  • During the Covid 19 lockdown, couples were together 24/7, there was difficulty in obtaining contraception, could this be leading to a Babyboom in 2021?
  • A usual indicator for increased births could be the 8 - 14 week baby scans, but this could be currently masked by expectant mothers not wanting to visit a hospital with a risk of catching Covid 19.
  • Over recent years, under normal circumstances UK maternity services have been stretched however if there is an increased pressure on maternity services during 2021, do maternity services have the funding, manpower and the latest technology to support additional demands?
  • If there was a second wave of Covid 19, would maternity services cope with the challenges of Covid 19 whilst managing births and expectant mothers?
