Sarah Seddon | Can't Anyone Untie Us?

This December, Whitewater Gallery presents Twenty Twenty, a collection of works by printmaker Sarah Seddon, in the last of their 2020 special Featured Artist exhibitions. Sarah studied Fine Art at Falmouth University, graduating in 2010. Her exquisitely detailed handmade prints are developed in limited edition using traditional metal plate etching and aquatint techniques, and her skilled work reflects the depth of detail possible in contemporary print.

This unique collection, created over the last twelve years, is inspired by Francisco de Goya's ‘Los Caprichos' series of satirical etchings and aquatints, which the Spanish artist created between 1797 and 1798 in response to the political corruption and social ills of the time. Paralleling Goya's collection in spirit, and in some cases responding directly to individual works, Sarah Seddon has created a series of etchings that addresses our own recent time in history. Set in the innocuous setting of an allotment, her images use visual metaphor to expose the social predicaments we are facing in the early 21st century. They also demonstrate her extraordinary ability as a printmaker, achieving fine drawing and delicate tonal qualities through the skilled application of aquatint, sugar-lift and pepper pot techniques.

Reproductions of selected Goya works will be included in the exhibition, and a limited-edition catalogue has been created to accompany the show.
