North Yorkshire whisky distillery wins two IWSC awards

The team at Yorkshire's first single malt whisky distillery is celebrating after winning two prestigious spirits awards.

Hunmanby based Spirit of Yorkshire's first ‘finished' single malt whisky, Filey Bay Moscatel Finish won a silver award and Filey Bay won bronze at the 2020 International Wines and Spirits Competition (IWSC).

Filey Bay Moscatel Finish was one of only eight English whiskies to be awarded a silver medal in the Worldwide Whisky category at what is one of the leading drinks competitions in the world. Silver medal winning spirits are typically described as ‘An accomplished spirit with good balance, strong character and good complexity. A classic example of its style or variety.'

The judging panel that comprised experienced sommeliers, distillers, vintners and distributors described Moscatel Finish as ‘Buttery vanilla fudge aromas with apricot tart and sweet conference pears; silky smooth and fantastically balanced on the palate with spicy cinnamon and a hint of succulent tropical pineapple.'

The team were also delighted that Filey Bay Second Release, the second single malt whisky of Spirit of Yorkshire's journey towards its flagship bottling and distillery character and style was awarded a bronze award. Judges' feedback included: ‘Orchard apple and pear scents, honeyed vanilla and undertones of spicy oak, with excellent length.'

Of the results, Spirit of Yorkshire's Whisky Director, Joe Clark said: ‘The IWSC is judged by people with years of experience andthese medals are great accolades and a timely reminder of why we're doing what we're doing: making world-class field to bottle whisky using 100% home grown barley, here on the Yorkshire Coast.

"Bronze and silver awards in our first year of being able to enter the IWSC is unbelievable You can guess what we're aiming for next year!"

The IWSC was launched by wine chemist,  Anton Massel as Club Oenologique, a competition created to reward excellence in wine and spirit production.

Spirit of Yorkshire was launched in 2016 and is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor from Wold Top Brewery and business partner, David Thompson.
