Rising Cornish artist Luke Knight, who was recently declared winner of the Barcelona International Gallery Awards, is continuing to raise the European profile of Contemporary Cornish painting, having been selected for the 2020 Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition in London. The themed exhibition, to be held at London's Mall Galleries this October, celebrates all aspects of the sea and features artwork by elected members and non-members of The RSMA, which is widely recognised as the focal point of Britain's finest contemporary marine art.

Luke's selected oil on board painting, titled ‘Porthtowan, Low Tide Cliff Stack', is inspired by the view towards Lushington Cove at Porthtowan, seen as the artist walks back from one of his regular evening surfs. All of Luke's paintings are inspired by the beauty of Cornwall, where he lives and works, and his passion for swimming in, surfing and painting the sea. Luke was raised in Cornwall and studied Fine Art at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, during which time he took part in an Erasmus Exchange at L'Ecole De Beaux-Art in France. In summer 2019 his coastal painting ‘Wish You Were Here' was awarded first place at the Barcelona International Gallery Awards, a prestigious art prize which includes a solo exhibition at Cage Gallery in Barcelona in 2021 (originally scheduled for summer 2020).

The B.I.G. prize also led to Luke's very first solo show, at Polzeath's Whitewater Gallery last March, which drew the attention of serious collectors of contemporary coastal art.

Of his recent success, Luke says "Art prizes and open submission shows like these have opened so many doors for me. They are a great way for artist to raise their profile and to draw attention to contemporary Cornish painting on a national and international level. So much great work is being made here right now, by so many brilliant painters, and if we can get that work in front of a wider audience, that's great for all of us."

The 2020 RSMA Exhibition prize winners will be announced on 30 September at 5pm.

The 2020 RSWA exhibition will be on show from 30thSeptember to 10thOctober at Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1. Seersma-web.co.uk,mallgalleries.org.ukandlukeknightpaintings.comfor further information.
