Animal Welfare Campaigners talks to Comics
Podcasting comics Leaf and Elfie have spoken to animal welfare campaigners as part of a ‘Vegetarian Special' edition launched today. Guests included Conservative politician Henry Smith and Founder of vegan charity Viva! Juliet Gellatley.
Crawley MP Henry Smith talked to comics about the political aspects of vegetarianism. Henry has been vegetarian since his teens and a member of several cross-party parliamentary groups focused on the welfare of animals, Henry was quizzed on a range of topics from Brexit to talking with dolphins.
Co-host Elfie said:
"What we eat plays a massive role in politics - from the environment and food standards, to our nation's health to our wishes being respected in later life residential care. Henry is a long time vegetarian and has campaigned for animal welfare policies such as CCTV in abattoirs. Leaf and I are staunch "lefties" and vegetarianism is typically associated with the left of politics, but I personally feel it's important to understand a range of viewpoints and try to find common ground on these big questions. We were thrilled to have such passionate and diverse guests to interview on the show"
The podcast discusses the environmental challenges faced by our reliance on factory farming as well as the risks and opportunities posed by changes in legislation when we leave the EU this year. Controversial topics such as food banks, Brexit and care homes were interspersed with lighter questions around talking to dolphins and otter pebble hoarding.
The second episode in the ‘Vegetarian Special' was with Juliet Gellatley and focussed on the impact of factory farming and the positive steps that consumers can make towards a more plant-based diet.
