Caroline Cleave | Lament

Throughout September, as part of their ongoing ‘Featured Artist' series, Whitewater Gallery presents new work by Caroline Cleave. Caroline has lived in Cornwall for over thirty years and is part of a family with a 400-year history in the fishing village of Port Isaac. She is well known for her stylised paintings of lobsters, crabs, fish and other sea creatures, inspired by her passion for nature, sustainability and the importance of the rural fishing economy.

For Caroline, lockdown became a period of considered self-reflection, leading to a body of experimental new work in both paint and handmade print. Working at her studio and later John Howard Print Studios in Penryn, she has developed her ongoing print collections to include a new series of drypoint monotypes that combine her distinctive graphic style with a much freer approach to mark making. Amongst her well-loved paintings and etchings of sea life, beautifully detailed monotypes of Turbot - known amongst fisherman as "The King of The Sea" - have been given a regal finish of subtle gold-leaf, while painterly images of Port Isaac have been enhanced with a final layer of hand printed detail.

Taking the viewer on an uplifting journey through the natural beauty of Cornwall's coastal flowers and ocean creatures, to a darker, more emotive sense of existing together in Cornwall through the pandemic, this exhibition marks an important moment in the history of our shared creative and commercial community.
