A Newcastle-under-Lyme firm has signed a major new agreement to test, repair and replace lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles (EV) across the UK and Europe.

Together with its German parent company and European subsidiaries, Hoppecke Industrial Batteries is partnering with CATL. The business is world leader in lithium-ion batteries for domestic and commercial electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

The pan-European contract reinforces Hoppecke's status as an independent energy storage expert for all battery technologies and a wide range of applications.

Stuart Browne, Hoppecke UK's General Manager, says: "We're delighted to announce this new partnership, which will help to secure local jobs over the long term, and are proud to be making an important contribution to the turnaround in electric vehicle mobility across Europe.

"Our experienced engineers will play an important role supporting workshops, making reliable diagnoses and carrying out repairs, to ensure that vehicles are back on the road quickly and safely."

More than 50 per cent of Hoppecke's UK business involves the support of essential services. Since the Covid-19 outbreak the company has been able to sustain its production levels and all 50 employees have been retained.

As electric becomes Europe's vehicle of choice, the lithium-ion battery is rapidly emerging as the key differentiator with the focus on capacity and service life. Hoppecke's ability to deliver a quality aftersales service is integral to a positive user experience, whilst the safe handling of lithium batteries requires significant technical expertise.

CATL has R&D and manufacturing capabilities throughout automotive supply chains and the energy storage sector and specialises in the production and sales of EV battery and energy storage systems. With a presence in China, France, the US, Canada and Japan, it enjoys long-established joint ventures and partnerships with some of the world's largest automotive companies including BMW.
