The team at Yorkshire's first single malt whisky distillery celebrated their fourth birthday with a virtual tasting session

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery marked the anniversary of its first distillation with a unique online tasting event that included previously unseen cask samples.

Last week, the team at the Hunmanby based distillery used Zoom to deliver a tutored tasting to over 40 participants.

Participants pre-ordered a special birthday tasting pack contained four, 20ml tasting samples together with tasting notes and a nosing glass. The sample pack comprised two unseen cask samples dating from 2016, one Filey Bay Moscatel Finish and one Filey Bay Second Release.

The session was led by Distillery Co-Founder, David Thompson and Whisky Director, Joe Clark, who said:  "The birthday tasting was for designed for existing and would be whisky lovers. The beauty of a tutored tasting like this is that people who think that they don't like whisky suddenly realise that they do, when they know how to nose and taste it properly.

"It's also a great way for people to try the Filey Bay whiskies before they buy."

Geoff Allen from Hull was one of the participants who enjoyed the virtual tasting: "In these times when social distancing is essential to maintain health, many would have cancelled the event but the team at Spirit of Yorkshire sent out a pack of samples and at 7pm on Thursday evening, we gathered beside our own firesides to be entertained by David, Joe and Jenni via Zoom and were enthralled for 100 high quality minutes.

"Their passion for whisky is only exceeded by their drive to follow the field to bottle ethos that gives them full control over the production process. Joe's encyclopaedic knowledge of the properties of the many casks already filled and his tasting notes to guide the novice palate, David's stories from first ideas through the current Covid-19 pandemic to his view of the future and Jenni's marketing input interspersed with nosing and tasting made for a great evening."

The team at Spirit of Yorkshire have also been using Facebook Live to do weekly broadcasts that have charted Filey Bay's journey from field to bottle over the last 11 weeks.

Filey Bay is Yorkshire's first single malt whisky. Filey Bay First Release was launched in October 2019 and sold out quickly, which brought forward the launch of the Second Release in January 2020. Filey Bay Moscatel Finish was launched in March 2020 and the latest release, Filey Bay STR Finish is available to pre-order now for delivery towards the end of July.
