Margate Bookie storytelling sessions to be available for children nationwide

Good afternoon,

Hope you're really well!
We are very happy to be the PR team behind the Kent lit fest, Margate Bookie, and would like to share their latest news with you as their storytelling sessions will be available online for children up and down the country on the festival's website after they've been live streamed into the Kent schools. If you'd like to interview the authors, headteacher, or Margate Bookie team, about the work they're doing with local schools during the pandemic, and how they've successfully switched from live events to online events thanks to the coronavirus with an exciting and full line-up scheduled for the rest of the year.

Happy to help!

Thanks,
Helen Lewis

PRESS RELEASE: Storytelling for schools as Margate Bookie brings authors to local children - via Zoom - starts today!

 July 2020

Sam Gayton, Dosh Archer, Gianna Pollero-Payne and Tamara Rattigan, children's authors and storytellers, will be reading their work to children of key workers and those on free school meals this July. The sessions will see the authors live streaming into the classroom of Drapers Mills Primary Academy & Little Millers Nursery, a school in Margate, as they approach the end of a very different school year. After the events, taking place on Tuesday 7, Thursday 9, Tuesday 14 and Thursday 16 July, the videos will be available on the Margate Bookie website, so that children and parents nationwide can benefit from them during the summer holiday.

Joseph Manclark, Head Teacher is excited about the events: "With so many of our children having been away from school for some time, it's lovely to be able to offer them some exciting storytelling opportunities now they have returned."

Councillor Barry Lewis, the county councillor for Margate and Drapers Mills school governor introduced Margate Bookie to the school. He says that: "This project will be fun for children at school to appreciate the beauty of books and poetry. It's an opportunity for children at a young age to learn just how valuable literature is."

Andreas Loizou, founder and director of Margate Bookie, agrees:  "Margate Bookie is all about bringing a love of books to new people and places. We know that Margate, being one of the most socially deprived areas in the country. has been hit hard by coronavirus, so we're excited to bring brilliant storytellers to the school in a way that is safe and responsible. We are immensely grateful to Arts Council England and Thanet District Council for funding these events."

It's one of many events in the 2020 Bookie Bonanza, which sees writing workshops, author chats, a poetry slam and even an online walk round Margate taking place between July and December. This year all events will be online, allowing the literature charity to engage both local audiences and those from further afield, in a way that keeps everyone happy, safe and healthy.
