Surface Finishing: OTEC and Fintek Green Initiatives
Making changes to reduce our usage of single-use plastics, Fintek, have moved from using plastic to paper packaging tape. “I worked-out that we were using nine miles of single-use plastic tape each year. Paper tape works just as good, while being biodegradable. All manufacturers have a role in helping to protect the environment from pollution and climate change. We are reviewing other areas of the business to assess where we can make changes, however small,” explained Jamie Phillips, Fintek operations manager.

Making a substantial investment in 1,992 solar panels on the sunbathed roof of their headquarter building is OTEC Präzisionsfinish GmbH, who make and supply surface finishing machines and consumables to Fintek, “These panels will deliver up to 450,000 kWh per year. This should mean that 85–90% of our entire electricity and heat consumption will come from renewable sources, allowing us to save around 55 tons of CO2 emissions each year,” explains Florian Gegenheimer, a controller and the son of managing director Helmut Gegenheimer.

OTEC already has a biomass heating system and lighting upgraded to LEDs which will save up to 80,000kWh a year. “The environmental work by Florian and his team at OTEC also means customers of Fintek in aerospace, motorsports, medical devices and other precision engineering can be certain that the disc, drag and stream surface finishing equipment they buy in the UK are amongst the most ‘green’ in the industry,” concluded Jamie.
