Throughout May, Whitewater Gallery presents the second in its 2020 series of featured artist exhibitions. Painter Simeon Stafford's distinctive style has made him one of the UKs most recognised artists.  He was born in 1956 near Manchester amid the gritty landscape of the industrial north, and as a child he met celebrated naïve painter L.S. Lowry, who encouraged him to pursue a career as an artist. Accordingly, Stafford's work is defined by the simple perspective, stylized figures and densely populated scenes of Lowry's oeuvre, but in a painterly, brightly coloured style all his own. Stafford moved to Cornwall in 1996, where his northern roots became fused with the influence of colour and light unique to the lively coastal landscape of the West. Characters and the buzz of humanity are central to his works, and many of his paintings feature individuals from his own life and family, including Auntie Dot, and Trixie the family Jack Russell who lived until she was 28.

Simeon has exhibited at the Royal Academy, and his work is held in numerous public and private collections, including that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
