Barrett Steel trials solar panels at AHA Steelstock in Burton/bs042-Bu / 25.06.13
As part of its Environmental Improvement StrategyBarrett Steelhas started a £300,000 project to install solar panels at four of its sites. The project, which will reduce the amount of CO²emissions by 150 tonnes, will be trialled initially at AHA Steelstock in Burton and at other Barrett sites in Reading, Oldham and Bradford. Within the next 12-18 months the project will be extended to Barrett Steel Group sites across the UK.
Mel Bray, Director of Integrated Management Systems, explains: "The project is an integral part of company strategy to reduce our carbon footprint. Not only will the system reduce CO²emissions it will also produce electricity for on-site use, with the excess exported to the grid."
Barrett SteelGroup is also working towards Group wide accreditation for the environmental standard, ISO 14001:2004, following the award in October 2012 toBarrett SteelServices Bradford, the Group's head office site. As part of the process the Group has already implemented initiatives to reduce electricity, water and fuel consumption, optimise raw material use and become more energy efficient in production processes.
