This Easter, Whitewater Gallery presents the first in a series of featured artist exhibitions for 2020. Painter Luke Knight was raised in Cornwall and studied Fine Art at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, during which time he took part in a four-month Erasmus Exchange at L'Ecole De Beaux-Art in Nantes in France. In summer 2019 his landscape painting ‘Wish You Were Here' was awarded first place at the Barcelona International Gallery Awards, a prestigious European art prize which includes a coveted solo exhibition in Barcelona later this year.
Luke's exceptionally beautiful oil on board paintings are inspired by the Cornish landscape and his passion for the ever-changing beauty of the sky and ocean. First saturating the board with paint, Luke strips back the surface of his works to create detail and texture, repeatedly colouring and eroding in a process that reflects the dynamic nature of the coastal landscape. The result is a collection of softly vibrant works, imbued with the colours of Cornwall throughout the seasons. Citing Pierre Bonnard, Julius Olsson and Fred Cumming RA as significant influences, and exhibiting a rare sensitivity for contemporary landscape painting, Luke is an award-winning new artist whose work is surely among the most collectable in 2020.
