Sue Watt | Porthmeor, Rock, Spinners

From 6 March to 6 April, Penwith Gallery hosts an exhibition by new artist Sue Watt, inspired by the unique interactions she shares with her disabled son.

Having produced an exceptional body of work during a year of study on the Porthmeor Programme at St Ives School of Painting, Sue presents paintings, collages and video installations from her ‘Spinning on Porthmeor' collection, which explores the interaction between herself and son Tom using a handmade spinner toy.

"The spinner idea" says Sue "started with a length of string that I used to twirl on my finger when Tom was young. Tom uses it as a way of communicating with me. He is never going to speak, he is never going to say ‘mum', so the spinner is a really significant thing, a special bond between us". Sue's experience of raising a child with complex disabilities is framed within the context of ‘time out' in St Ives, a place she visits for short periods of respite. The thoughts and feelings expressed in her short films are complemented by a collection of impressive, large scale paintings and smaller collage works, which explore the intimacy of this special relationship between mother and child.
