Broadway Collection Shows Win 11 Awards &
Receive 48 Nominations At Broadway's Night Of The Year
And to prove the popularity of British theatre in the US, two British-inspired shows: Kinky Boots and Matilda won no less than 10 awards between them at the 67thannual Tony Awards and Broadway Collection show members received an outstanding 48 combined nominations.
Kinky Boots, the most Tony-nominated show of the season, walked away with an outstanding 6 awards including: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
Matilda the Musical, based on the beloved story by Roald Dahl, won 4 including: Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design in a Musical. The four actresses who created the title role of Matilda on Broadway were also honoured by the Tony Award committee for Excellence in Theatre.
The third Broadway Collection show to win a gong was the classic fairy tale Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella which won the award for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
Presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, the Tony Awards pay tribute to the best new productions of the season.
