BELLWAY'S TOP TIPS FOR HOME SECURITY DURING AUTUMN AND WINTER

With the clocks set to go back this weekend, the Yorkshire division of national homebuilder, Bellway has drawn up a simple list of home security top tips that it says will help put off burglars during the dark autumn and winter nights.

Melanie Smith, Bellway Yorkshire's head of sales, said: "Every year the clocks go back and every year, without fail, the police report a rise in the number of break-ins, and one of the main reasons for it is an annoyingly simple one - home security lapses that homeowners and tenants can easily address."

Bellway's top tips are a series of home security steps that are quick, easy and cost-effective, and when practiced regularly will reduce the chances of being burgled.

  • Use timer switches to turn lights on when you're out - and alternate the timings to make it look like someone is at home
  • Use the home security you already have - if you have an alarm set it when you go out, and if you have outdoor lighting on movement sensors, make sure they are always switched on and the bulbs working
  • Don't leave valuable items where they can be seen through downstairs windows - e.g. laptops, tablets, game consoles, car keys etc.
  • Get into the habit of locking doors when you're at home, and removing the keys from the lock and storing them somewhere out of view / reach from the door, but where you can easily find them in case of an emergency
  • Make sure you have a strong padlock securing your shed door.
  • Don't share your whereabouts on social media
  • Consider starting or joining a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme - it doesn't take long and with everyone working together crime prevention really is possible

"Our top tips may seem very simple, but burglary is an opportunistic crime, and so you don't have to do a lot to put someone off from trying to break in," continued Melanie. "By making your home look occupied when you're out, and keeping it secure when you're at home you really can reduce the likelihood of becoming the victim of a break-in.

October has been National Home Security Month - an annual event that focuses public attention of home security issues and solutions. All the information about the month can be found atwww.homesecuritymonth.com

"Virtually everybody has an insurance policy that will cover the cost of replacing items damaged or stolen during a burglary, but every year so many people become victims because they didn't take the simple steps needed to prevent a break-in happening in the first place," concluded Melanie. "If people treat our top tips, and the advice being issued during National Home Security Month, as an extra level of insurance then hopefully  2019 will be the year break-ins fell away during autumn and winter."

Bellway is currently building new communities in 14 locations across Yorkshire, with developments in Anlaby, Apperley Bridge, Driffield, Guisborough, Harrogate, Howden, Leeds, Market Weighton, Pannal, Pocklington, Queensbury, Thirsk, Wakefield and Wetherby.
