Xylem wins first CAPEX project with
Southern Water
In its first CAPEX project for Southern Water, Xylem Water Solutions UK drew on its expertise in pump technology to provide an economic and easy to maintain waste water management solution for the Isle of Wight.
The project involved the refurbishment of a treatment/dry weather flow wet well at Albany Road water pumping station, a category A facility in East Cowes, to eliminate the potential for spills and risk of pollution and to improve long-term wastewater management.
Maximising the latest technical advances in the water transport industry, Xylem was able to deliver the most efficient solution on the market. Three existing ABS treatment/dry weather flow pumps were replaced with Flygt NS3301 70kW pumps featuring the latest IE3 motor and PumpSmart VFD control display equipment to ensure optimum performance at all times and power saving economy.
Two new Lucy pillars and associated electrical equipment were introduced along with stainless steel guide rails, which offer a longer life and improve operating efficiency with minimal maintenance costs. In a solution built to last, ducksfoot and connecting pipework manufactured from ductile iron were installed along with isolation and non-return valves and joints.
The age of the pumping station, last renovated in 1999, and the volume of the incoming flow meant that the project was not without its challenges. A 1200mm gravity sewer feeds a dry weather flow wet well with a 1200mm inlet through to an adjacent storm wet well, which is utilised when the flows introduced exceed the station's pass forward rate of 164l/s. The key issue was how to maintain the overflow to storm capability throughout the refurbishment in the event of storm flows. To accommodate the works a point of isolation for the gravity sewer also had to be created.
It was agreed that a penstock valve should be installed. Southern Water's asset integration and safety teams collaborated with Xylem to calculate potential flows that could be introduced into the wet well along with the average hold time in dry and wet weather conditions. A special plate was then manufactured to square off the opening to the cylindrical wet well so that a new penstock could be sited to hold flows. Conforming to all Southern Water's current MEDs, the stainless steel valve is a permanent fixture and will enable future maintenance at the treatment/dry weather flow wet well to be carried out safely in complete isolation from the mains.
Commenting on Xylem's commitment to overcoming unexpected issues, including seized sluice valves and problems with the rising main valve seal, Christopher Tinker, project manager for CAPEX at Southern Water, said: "Xylem remained focussed, professional and always found a solution. It was a pleasure to work with a strong delivery team which has given the SWS operations team a reliable set of assets for long term future use."
A reduction in power consumption, operational integrity and maintenance costs has brought Albany Road water pumping station up to Southern Water's demanding engineering standards. Importantly, Xylem's water management solution has also provided extra peace of mind for Isle of Wight consumers.
