North Yorkshire rapeseed oil producer creates perfect mayos for Great Taste

A Thixendale family business that has created a range of British rapeseed oil-based products using its own farm-produced oil is celebrating a double win at the Great Taste Awards.

Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil's Mustard Mayonnaise and sister company Charlie & Ivy's Chipotle Mayonnaise were both awarded a gold star at the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards, and are the only ones from the North of England to have gained accolades in the ‘Mayonnaise including rouille'category.

Often described as the ‘Oscars' of the food world, the prestigious Great Taste scheme is the world's largest and most trusted food and drink awards.

Both products are made using a base of extra virgin cold-pressed Yorkshire-produced rapeseed oil and have been developed for flavour and versatility, Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil's Jennie Palmer said.

"We have always concentrated on creating excellent flavour combinations to make people stop and think, ‘Wow, this is incredible', and we wanted to see whether our mayos could compete with some of the best out there.

"Winning these Great Taste stars is a huge achievement and is testament to our great team."

Of the Yorkshire Mustard Mayonnaise, judges commented: ‘A lovely sunny homemade appearance with deep rich natural yellow colour and appealing flecks of seed. A soft, almost velvety texture in the mouth producing a really luxurious taste sensation. Carefully chosen rapeseed oil is a good carrier as it doesn't dominate the other flavours. The judges felt that this would really make a fabulous accompaniment to salads, meats and a perfect partner for a ploughman's.'

Of Charlie & Ivy's Chipotle Mayo, the judges remarked: ‘There is a little smoke from the chilli on the nose from this well textured mayonnaise. A most interesting flavour journey that offers silkiness, heat, creamy richness and fun.'

There were a record 12, 772 products entered into Great Taste awards this year and only 39 percent of entries were accredited. 500 judges, comprised of judges, buyers, food writers and retailers, blind taste-tested the products between March and July.

Both products are available from delis, farm shops and independent retailers throughout the UK and from the respective websites yorkshirerapeseedoil.co.uk and charlieandivys.co.uk.
